OPEN HEAVENS DEVOTIONAL - SATURDAY 1/06/2013 - WHO GETS GOD'S MERCY BY PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

Who Gets God’s Mercy

Memorise:
Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Matthew 5:7

Read
Exodus 20:4-6

Exodus 20:4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

Exodus 20:5 You shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,

Exodus 20:6 But showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

MESSAGE:
God is sovereign. Being the highest of all, He cannot be queried over what He does. He went into the midst of a crowd of sick people, healed one man and left (John 5:2-9). What made Him pick this particular man? Sheer mercy! The man did not pray, nor did he even know the Person of Jesus. After his healing, when people asked him why he was carrying his bed on that Sabbath day, he said the one who healed him asked him to carry his bed. What was his name? At that time he did not know. He did not do anything to qualify him for that healing but God's mercy singled him out. In Mark 1:40-42, when a leper met the Lord, he told the Lord he was sure He could heal him, but what he did not know was whether the Lord was willing to, the Lord was moved with compassion. Are you presently in a situation where you do not qualify for God's blessings? God's mercy will speak in your favour today!

Who are the recipients of God's mercy? Matthew 5:7 says if you sow mercy, you will reap mercy in return. If you want to receive mercy, avoid everything to do with wickedness. Also, Romans 9:15-16 says God uses His prerogative to decide who would benefit from His mercy. May He choose you as His next candidate for mercy! In addition, Psalm 103:11 says the fear of God makes you to access God's abundant mercy. Do you fear God? Exodus 20:6 says loving God and keeping His commandments can earn you God's mercy. To fear God means to flee from anything evil and to do God's will. Contrary to what many think or say, God's commandment is not only simple but also easy to obey. Which of the commandments do you find difficult to obey? You honour somebody when you give him or her something that the fellow does not need. Honorary degrees are given to people who did not study for that degree. They did not deserve it but it is given to honour them. Do you truly love God? Do you honour Him with your substance? What are you doing to receive God's mercy?

Key Point:
Back up your request for mercy with works of mercy or else it may elude you.
